Artist's Statement
John McBurney comes from a drag background... I’m a drag artist and performer. I’ve been a free-lance make up artist for over 25 years. I have worked on costumes for numerous video, film and stage productions. I have also been a dresser for The Lion King and Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic Theater.
As an artist, my passion is “Old school drag.” My work is built from scratch, where costumes and make up play a huge part of what you see on stage. These days, you might see drag performers who go out of their way to enhance their appearance via surgery, botox and hormone therapy. My mission is to continue to show raw talent, of all shapes and sizes, in the tradition of burlesque and old Hollywood glamour.
