GAIL J WETTSTEIN
Artist's Statement
My name is Gail Wettstein and I am a classically trained soprano. I have sung professionally in Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Denmark, South Africa and Saudi Arabia. I moved to San Antonio six years ago. Since my arrival in San Antonio, I have been very active in the arts. Amy Venticinque, who plays second violin with the San Antonio Symphony, and I have collaborated to perform five benefit concerts: the first benefited a young destitute family, the second benefited the San Antonio Symphony, the third benefited women's shelters, while the fourth and fifth concerts benefited the animal shelters of San Antonio. During this time I have also been a featured soloist with the San Antonio Mastersingers, San Antonio Opera, Go for Baroque ensemble, The Masterworks series, Musical Offerings, and the Magik Theatre. I love to be involved in the performance of wonderfully crafted music, even as I strive to sing it as it deserves. I derive particular pleasure from exposing people to the joy of a new type of music. This has greatly added to my enjoyment of participating in the Dr. Suess children's operas last year performed at the Magik Theatre. Children are so open and honest with their opinions and they absolutely loved what was for most of them their first exposure to opera. I hope the "Bug" opera opening in two weeks at the Magik Theatre garners the same response.
The richness and depth of the musical community in San Antonio has great enhanced my opportunities to collaborate with world class musicians in a variety of venues. The resulting music has been inspirational for me. I look forward to organizing and performing classical and operatic works for many years to come within this community.
