Artist Profile

ROBERT W REHM

Artist's Statement
I have been an artist all my life. In 2005, I suffered an accident which left me paralyzed from the neck down. Since then I have had to develop new methods of bringing my art to life (ie. painting with a brush in my mouth and designing on computer with a special mouth controlled device called a "quad joy"). As a quadriplegic artist, i have created set designs for several original works at Jump-Start Performance Co.

It is my belief that a good set design must not only provide a mere backdrop for actors, but convey the heart and soul of a play or performance. In many ways I look at a set design as being another character in the piece, without upstaging the actors.

I feel extremely fortunate that I am able to continue my life as an artist despite my handicap.
